'A Traveller in Time' by Alison Uttley
What would you do if you could travel back in time and be in the middle of the Tudor Babington Plot of 1586? Treason, execution, romance and secrets... little Penelope witnesses it all.
In A Traveller in Time (1939), Penelope and her siblings visit their Aunt Tissie and Uncle Barnabas at an old place called Thackers. She soon discovers that she can slip back and forth through time and gets herself in the middle of the famous Babington Plot. To her surprise, she winds up in a romance with a very important man named Francis... one who is at forefront of the feud between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots.
Whilst this story is aimed at children, I enjoyed it very much as an adult. Anyone who loves Tudor history, romance or fantasy is bound to enjoy this tale. I wish I had read this sooner!
