'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy
The Road (2006) by Cormac McCarthy is disturbing, bleak and heart-shattering in the best way possible. It will disgust you, make you cry, warm your heart and have you terrified. A father and son embark on a long, tedious journey through the wilderness, encountering cannibals and savages who try to kill them. Battling to survive, extreme hunger and freezing weather conditions, what lies ahead seems hopeless and out of reach. The only thing they have is faith. This book is not one of great dialogue but rather shows how human beings connect without saying a thing. The imagery is fantastic. It drags you into the scene as though you are there, witnessing the horrid conditions yourself. It is the story of how a father and son face the most extreme challenges in the hopes of finding a better life elsewhere. Overall, this novel teaches you that whatever the scenario, humanity and love should conquer.
